What role can translators and interpreters play in a world where globalization is on the rise? How does technological progress affect our profession? What steps should we take to prepare ourselves for an ever-changing world?

On 10 November 2017, the Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters of Catalonia (APTIC) and the International Federation of Translators (FIT-Europe) will tackle these questions – and many more. Join leading language and technology experts for debates and presentations that shed light on the future of our industry.

We look forward to seeing you there![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

English: whose language is it anyway?

This talk will look at the role of English as an international language of communication. The lecture will first look at the rise of corporate jargon and the demand for plain English in the UK, before examining the use and misuse of English in the EU institutions, and finally discussing the role of English as a lingua franca in today’s global world and what this means for translators and interpreters.
* The Future of English in the EU Post-Brexit
* How English is used (and misused) in the EU
* What the rise of Globish means for translators and interpreters[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

ALEXANDER DRECHSEL

Online privacy and data protection for linguists – a no-nonsense, hands-on introduction

Our private and professional lives happen increasingly online. However, we often compromise our privacy and put the integrity of data and information at risk. Public and private entities exploit that: invasive ads, tracking across websites, profiling, restrictive digital rights management, attacks on net neutrality, bulk data collection – the list goes on. It is time for language professionals to reclaim control, especially when handling client data, which can be sensitive or even confidential. This hands-on talk provides practical solutions: from secure wi-fi on the go to safer passwords and having your files available and yet safe.
* What Snowden and other revelations mean for us
* Encryption: What is it and why should we care?
* Pros and cons of cloud computing
* Private cloud
* Protecting your information on public wifi
* The dark side of online ads
* Good password practice

Communications and social media for translators, interpreters and associations

  • What types of communications are right for me?
  • Identifying your target audience
  • Positioning yourself as an expert
  • The pros and cons of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blogging, and other types of communications tools

FILIP MAJCEN

Filip Majcen is Director in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Interpretation in Brussels,  responsible for multilingualism and interpreter training support, programming of interpretation, professional support to interpreters, and joint management of external conference interpreting staff. Prior to being appointed to his current post in March 2017, he was Director in the  Directorate-General for Translation, in charge of a range of emerging services, such as web translation, localisation, the clear writing campaign, as well as the development of the quality management framework. Before that he worked in the financial services sector in Luxembourg. He graduated in international economic relations and international finance at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and is fluent in 6 European languages.

The Knowledge Centre on Interpretation

DG Interpretation has embarked on this ambitious project with the aim to manage, share and disseminate its know-how in a modern, dynamic way, while reaching out and facilitating exchanges with a wider public.

We are building on what we already have in terms of the knowledge, partnerships and networks that we have developed over the years. We expect that the platform, once up and running, will grow organically to serve as a focal point of expertise in interpretation, not exclusively conference interpreting but also other types, such as public service interpreting.

The Knowledge Centre on Interpretation will be a web-based, single go-to space for anyone, anywhere, requiring information on any kind of interpreting and related disciplines. It will be a platform built around three inter-linked pillars: Knowledge, Partnership and Innovation.

The project is already well under way and we are in the process of identifying the needs of future users, which in turn will feed into the definition of the requirements for the design and development of the platform.
