BIOGRAPHY

Nicholas Ostler is an Englishman, with a first-class degree in Classics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University, and PhD in Linguistics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied under Noam Chomsky. His doctoral thesis, Case Linking, focused on Sanskrit. He has also provided the first modern analysis of the Chibcha language, once spoken in Colombia. He has taught linguistics in universities in Japan, the UK, Turkey and Kazakhstan. He has consulted on language technology projects, including machine translation, for the UK government, and the European Union. He now advises ICANN on use of non-Roman scripts in internationalized domain names on the Internet. He is the founder and chairman of the Foundation for Endangered Languages, a charity which has awarded 130 small project grants, and hosted 20 conferences worldwide over the past 20 years. Since 2005 he has published four books on language history, listed below. He is married with a daughter, five stepchildren, and eleven grandchildren, and lives in Hungerford near London.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
