Talk by Nicholas Ostler

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Ostler examines the prospects of English, currently the pre-eminent mode of international communication, by putting it into context both with major lingua-francas of the past, and also its potential contenders in future. His conclusion is that the position of English is not as unique as it is often believed to be, but that — like any lingua franca — its future depends on developments in international politics and the purposes to which it – and its rivals – may be put.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
